DIR: JOSEPHINE MACKERRAS. WITH: EMILIE PIPONNIER, MARTIN SWABEY, CHLOÉ BOREHAM. FRANCE 2019. FRENCH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES
An engaging portrait of a woman rebuilding her life after it has been completely dismantled, Alice is a blistering showcase for actress Emilie Piponnier in her first lead role. Alice, a happy and perfect wife and mother has her life turned upside down when she discovers her husband is living a secret life. Broke, alone, and suddenly saddled with sole financial responsibility, Alice must completely reinvent herself in order to survive. What follows is a complicated, nuanced tale of female empowerment, sexual politics, and how easily people can slip through the cracks of society. Josephine Mackerras’ debut feature was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW earlier this year. Hard-hitting but at times bitingly funny, Alice demonstrates how, even with the smallest of budgets, genuine talent shines through.
