George and Ira Gershwin’s vibrant folk opera about a poor black fishing community in South Carolina, in the early twentieth century.

When Bess is abandoned by her lover, the only person who shows her kindness is the crippled beggar Porgy. The pair are happy together but have to contend with the destructiveness of Bess’s violent ex-lover Crown and the slippery-tongued drug dealer, Sportin’ Life.

James Robinson’s stylish and raved-about new production, which played in London and Amsterdam in 2019, is now at the Met. Enter the hazy summer heat of the American south and be swept away by the Gershwins’ wonderful score and its now legendary jazz and blues classic numbers.
