Richard Strauss’s blazing one-act drama recounts the ancient Greek myth of the princess Elektra. Bloodthirsty and obsessive, Elektra and her brother Orestes seek to revenge the murder of their father, King Agamemnon. The Austrian writer Hugo von Hoffmannstal, based his libretto loosely on Sophocles but brought the story into the twentieth century. The opera hit a raw nerve when it was premiered in 1909 and continues to shock and excite audiences over a century later. For this new staging by Christof Loy, Strauss’s frenzied score is conducted by Antonio Pappano. An outstanding cast includes Nina Stemme in the title role and Karita Mattila as Klytämnestra.
