Liam Scarlett’s 2018 staging of Swan Lake, The Royal Ballet’s first new production of the classic for over 30 years, is given its first revival. While remaining faithful to the choreography of the 1895 version by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, Scarlett brings fresh eyes to the staging of this fairy-tale work.
Beautiful, atmospheric sets of the moonlit lake and of regal courtly splendour are designed by John MacFarlane, and Tchaikovsky’s first score for the ballet soars, from the music for Prince Siegfried and Odile’s grand pas de deux to the famous dance of the swans. Today Swan Lake is arguably the most admired of all classical ballets, beloved for the sublime, symphonic sweep of the music, but also for the striking choreographic contrasts and the romantic storyline. This production stars Lauren Cuthbertson and William Bracewell.
