The Glass Castle

Director: Destin Daniel Cretton.
Starring: Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts. USA 2017. 127 mins.

Reunited with Oscar-winner Brie Larson, writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton (Short Term 12) crafts a compelling adaptation of Jeannette Walls’s bestselling memoir about the wild life she and her three sisters alternately enjoyed and endured in a bohemian household during the 1980s. A superlative Woody Harrelson and a formidable Naomi Watts play her impulsive, often irresponsible parents living in poverty on Manhattan’s Lower East Side; Larson stars as steely journalist Jeanette, who recalls her upbringing in which she eventually found the fiery determination to carve out a successful life on her own terms. In this remarkable story of unconditional love in a family at once dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant, Cretton depicts the conflicts and free-spirited surges without judgement, while the performances are fantastic, especially from Harrelson as the gifted but troubled father.
