The Seagull

Director: Michael Mayer
Starring: Annette Bening, Saoirse Ronan, Elisabeth Moss
Duration: 99 min

Set in the early twentieth century and adding wings to Anton Chekhov’s classic play, The Seagull sees a tangle of romantic love affairs play out at a family gathering in the countryside. Four-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening plays the grand and difficult Irina Arkadina, a diva who heads to a lakeside Russian estate to visit her brother Pjotr Nikolayevich Sorin (Death Of A Salesman’s Brian Dennehy) and her son, the sensitive Konstantin (Dunkirk’s Billy Howle). But when successful novelist Boris Trigorin (Midnight In Paris’s Stoll) and young and innocent Nina (rising star Ronan), appear on the scene and disrupt the family dynamic, love’s all-encompassing power is put to the test. An all-star cast brings razor-sharp wit, comedy and sensual allure to Mayer’s theatrical adaptation, all set in a lush setting of woodlands and samovar-laden patios.

Contains infrequent scenes of violence.
