Swedish director Tomas Alfredson doesn’t often grace the big screen but his efforts are always exceptional. After his 2008 breakout, the atmospherically stunning Let The Right One In, we had to wait until 2011 for the superlative Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Now we’re blessed with a tense murder-mystery penned by Nordic noir’s greatest storyteller, Joe Nesbø. Alfredson has enrolled a stellar cast to tell the tale, with Michael Fassbender as Nesbø’s regular sleuth, Harry Hole, whose missing-person investigation turns into a hunt for a creepy serial killer whose calling card is – you guessed it – an ominous-looking snowman left at the crime scene. With the help of a brilliant new recruit, Katrine Bratt (Ferguson), Hole must outwit this unthinkable evil before the next snowfall. Others implicated in a particularly gruesome plot include Charlotte Gainsbourg, J. K. Simmons and Toby Jones.
