Director: Lisa Gornick. UK 2017. 76 minutes.
Presented by Eyes Wide Open Cinema - Brighton’s queer film programme. With live British Sign Language interpretation and captions (subtitles).
Lisa Gornick is a filmmaker/performer/artist. With The Book Of Gabrielle, her third feature film, she brings together all three. At the core of the project is a finite feature film and around it are
complementary but independent events: an evolving live drawing show, a book and a web series.
The Book Of Gabrielle tells the story of a chance encounter between an illustrator who is working on a “how to” sex book and a well-known author, which develops into a complex and
revealing mentor-protégé relationship. Funny, insightful and highly risqué, our protagonist begins to question everything she knows about sex, love and art.
The screening will be accompanied by a 20 minute live drawing show, derived from the one hour show, “What is lesbian film?” A personal and irreverent exploration of the notion, the niche and the wonder of lesbian cinema.
Lisa Gornick has made two award winning feature films: Do I Love You? (2003) and Tick Tock Lullaby (2007). She has directed for Channel 4, acted in films and theatre and has performed in her own live drawing shows at The Gilded Balloon, Edinburgh Fringe, Soho Theatre, JW3, The Poetry Society and The Book Club. Alongside, the Book of Gabrielle, Lisa has been commissioned by UCL Art Museum to make a new one hour drawing show. She is
developing her fourth feature with executive producer Jacquie Lawrence and producer Felicity Milton.
